My Favorite Love Songs

love and romance

What better day than Valentine’s day to air my love song grievances AND share my favorite ones?

I’m not really one for love songs. Like, not at all. Most “love songs” speak more of lust and infatuation than of love.  They speak of some romantic ideal that can be both elusive and fleeting in the trenches of real life.  They speak of feelings, not action in the face of adversity. Most love songs are nothing more than a novel notion of love picked out of a dime store harlequin romance novel and set to music. Not to mention that most of them are written andor sung by people whose next hit love song will be about someone entirely new.  Gimme a break.

But, there are some good ones…… songs that speak to my heart and make me want to love more and love deeper…….regardless of the circumstances of life. Songs that speak of love as an action instead of a fleeting whim . Just. Good. Songs.

My very two favorites, the ones that ALWAYS tug at my heartstrings are:

Dancing in the Minefields” by Andrew Peterson

Well I do are the two most famous last words
The beginning of the end
But to lose your life for another I’ve heard is a good place to begin
Cause the only way to find your life is to lay your own life down
And I believe it’s an easy price for the life that we have found

Chorus:
And we’re dancing in the minefields
We’re sailing in the storms
And this is harder than we dreamed
But I believe that’s what the promise is for
That’s what the promise is for

Bridge:
So when I lose my way, find me
When I loose love’s chains, bind me
At the end of all my faith
to the end of all my days
when I forget my name, remind me

Cause we bear the light of the son of man
So there’s nothing left to fear
So I’ll walk with you in the shadow lands
Till the shadows disappear
Cause he promised not to leave us
And his promises are true
So in the face of all this chaos baby
I can dance with you

AND “Love is Not a Fight” by Warren Barfield

Love is not a place
to come and go as we please
It’s a house we enter in
then commit to never leave

So lock the door behind you
Throw away the key
Work it out together
Let it bring us to our knees

Love is a shelter
in a raging storm
Love is peace
in the middle of a war
If we try to leave;
May God send angels to guard the door
No, Love is not a fight
but its something worth fighting for

Some love is a word
that they can fall into.
But when they’re falling out
keeping that word is hard to do

Love is a shelter
in a raging storm
Love is peace
in the middle of a war
If we try to leave;
May God send angels to guard the door
No, Love is not a fight
but its something worth fighting for

Really. Have a listen. They’re beautiful.

I know there are others out there, but these are the ones that never fail to speak to my heart.  How about you? Any favorite love songs?
