A Quick Question For YOU About Fitness Motivation

Scrolling through pinterest this morning, I saw again and again unrealistically “fit” {most of them underweight} women pinned by  many female pinners as “fitness motivation.”  I know I have my opinions about it, and there’s a blog post in the making here, but I would like to know from YOU.

I’m just wondering……….

Do you think that images like this one are truly good motivation for implementing a lifestyle of health and fitness?

I would SO appreciate you just leaving me a quick comment of ‘yes’ or ‘no’. If you’d like to elaborate about why you think it is or isn’t good motivation, I’d love it, but a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ will do just fine.  And would you help me tweet it & Facebook it? I would like to hear from lots of women on this topic.

P.S. BTW, I think that she’s absolutely lovely & has  worked very hard for the body she has. This is not at all about jealousy or envy.

  1. No this is not motivating. I feel a lot of what we look at in magazines has been photo shopped. I think if a person has a journey to get back to what healthy is this is actually very demotivating. However, some people may be motivated by this. I also think young girls can be pressured into something not realistic or healthy for them. We are all so different!

  2. I think if you greased me up and took a photograph with High contrast lighting like this, I might look pretty good. You’re not even seeing her whole body. Look at the size of her arms. I think like most magazine covers, the photographer is to blame for unrealistic images too. And no, this is not motivating and I see it a lot on Pinterest too. I don’t think it’s unrealistic, but most people, women, or men won’t put in the work they need to to get this buff.

  3. Rather than motivating, I think it’s unrealistic and unattainable. I’m not so sure a women’s body is meant to look that like. At this point in my life, simply toning up is my goal.

    No this in no way helps me, actually I think it hinders me as there is no way my body could look like that, I really don’t think its possible. Anywho, I am not one to pin anything related to fitness unless you count a few weight watchers recipes. I am a weirdo and don’t want to be seen by the cyber world as a hypocrite, I won’t pin something I won’t use and I’ll be honest me and working out so not BFF’s so I’d rather work out on my own and in privacy and if I get ‘skinny’ cool if not O well, at least I am trying little by little.

  6. No for two reasons: 1. She is SO fit that it feels completely unattainable–like I’d have to give up my entire life just to get there, which I’m not willing to do. 2. I don’t think my husband would even like me to be that fit!

  7. Yes and no. I think having a reasonable idea of fitness goals is important. And as you said, it’s important to realize how hard she works for that – it must be a part time to full time job.

    That actually helps me justify the time I spend at the gym – it’s a commitment of effort and sweat but also our time. Sometimes I’ll be driving home and be proud of what I put in for the day, but feel I almost “wasted” the morning. I could have been working on jewelry, working on other crafts, or doing the list of chores that never ends. But it’s okay to commit that time to the gym, it’s not unreasonable. I hope that makes sense! 😀

  8. For the most part they discourage me. I don’t even want to get out of my chair because it all seems so impossible to attain. Once in awhile, if I happen to be in a routine of exercising, they motivate me to keep going and be the best I can be.

  9. I think that the degree of motivation derived from a picture like that depends on two factors: how far along people are on their journey, and their personalities. People with a victim mentality who haven’t started yet will not be motivated by that – in fact they may be demotivated (just look at some of the above comments…).

    However if you have more of a fighter mentality that picture will be incredibly motivating! I’m a man and even a picture of a woman who demonstrates the fruits of hard work like that motivates me.

    I don’t think that one should ignore physiques like that just because one doesn’t want the same body. It’s still a major accomplishment (as you pointed out) and inspiration can be drawn from that regardless of the end goal. In my transformation I used pictures of massive body builders even though that’s not how I want to look (or feel) – but their discipline and accomplishments inspired and motivated me a lot.

    • Some good points Christian! It’s funny – there was a PDX90 infomercial stuck on the TV at the gym during my run today, lots of really, really fit and sculpted people – I found it motivating, ran an extra mile even!

      You put your finger on it – it’s their discipline that’s motivating to me – that’s a serious commitment, makes my run seem more doable.

  10. Personally, when I’m looking for images to inspire me to get up and get moving, I tend to look for pictures of ladies who are around my current size to motivate me, rather than photos of women who’s bodies reflect little of my current reality.
